Thomas Hudson was a member of a well known Dublin cricket family most of whom played for Leinster.Though he gained an Irish cap, Thomas does not appear to have been a particularly accomplished player.

In the 1865 season, for example, he had an average of 13 for the 2nd XI, though this included a score of 65 in match between sides raised by the Barry brothers George and Samuel. The following season Thomas hardly played at all managing only 11 runs in 4 innings.

His sole cap came in 1865 for XXII of Ireland against the United South Of England XI, the third and last of the great Professional XIs to be founded. This was their first match and the first to be played at the Observatory Lane ground. The match, though the best attended so far in Ireland, was ruined by rain and the dilatory time keeping of the hosts.

The XXII included 17 new caps of whom only 5 played for Ireland again. The selection was criticised as the side was nowhere near as strong or broad based as it could have been. Thomas who batted at 22 was probably lucky to have been selected. However Ireland began well, dismissing their mighty guests for 59, with the Phoenix all rounder WS Ashton taking 5-21. However Ireland then collapsed , being bowled out for 82 by the masters of the bowling art Edgar Wilisher and James Lillwjite, junior. THomas, who fell to the slow left arm underarmers of George Griffith "failed to trouble the scorers." He was clearly outclassed, his "antics" at the wicket being described as "laughable". Rain again intervened on the third day, preventing Ireland chasing an unlikely target of 198.

Thomas Hudson did not play for Ireland again. Much of his life remains a mystery and we would welcome any information which might fill in some of the missing details.
