William Swann is one other cricketers featured in these biographies about whom very little is known. He appears, however, to have been a prominent player with the Clydesdale Club whom he represented against the All England XI in 1859, the Club playing 22. Batting up the order he was dismissed by the Cambridgeshire lob bowler Fred Reynolds for 5 in the first innings and 0 in the second in a drawn match, time running out as the visitors closed on their target. Fred took 18 wickets in the match.

This performance was, at least, a marginal improvement on his appearance for Glasgow XXII against the same opposition two years previously. Batting at 12, he was caught v by wicket keeper Lockyer off the redoubtable paceman John Jackson for a duck. There was no time for him to bat again.

He was well known to Charles Lawrence as the latter had, of course, played for several seasons in Scotland before his time in Ireland began and also continued to appear in some Scottish cricket after he became professional at Phoenix. Thus when Lawrence arrived in Scotland with his United Ireland XI in 1861, short of three players, William was a natural choice for him to call on. In company with the better known Daniel Duff and John McNeill he took the field for Ireland against Colonel Buchanan's XIV of Scotland. However he batted down the order in his only innings and was run out for 8.
