Howard Le Peton, second of three sons of Alfred Le Peton, Headmaster of Earlsfort House School Dublin, was a sound middle order bat who had a brief career in Irish Cricket. His club cricket was played for Phoenix for whom he played 24 League matches in the seasons immediately after the First World War. He scored 531 runs at an average of 23.08, with a highest score of 90. These figures suggest a useful rather than outstanding player, so his selection for Ireland must be seen as having been somewhat of a surprise.

The match in which he played, against Scotland in 1921, was ruined by rain. Half the first day, and all the second were lost, and only the Cambridge Blue and Middlesex all rounder, EL Kidd, on his debut for Ireland, mastered the conditions with 66. Hugh batted at 8, and his 16, was one of only four double figure scores for his side. He was caught by David Riddell off the bowling of TD Watt. Riddell, who eventually emigrated to Australia, was a batsman who played three matches for Scotland while Watt was a medium pacer who gained 15 caps. The match finished in a draw, much in the hosts' favour, with veteran Bill Harrington, in his last match for Ireland, just failing to bowl the visitors out twice.

As will be clear from the above little is known about Howard Le Peton's subsequent career on or off the cricket field. Research continues and, naturally, any further information would be most welcome.
