Tom Hone was probably the least successful member of a very distinguished Irish cricket family. His two elder brothers both played for Ireland as did his three first cousins, His younger brother Nataniel, gained a Cambridge blue in 1881, as a wicket keeper, but died tragically, later that year, having drunk carbolic acid believing it to be senna, while in Limerick on a Na Shuler tour.

Tom played one match for Ireland v I Zingari at Phoenix CC in 1877. This match was won by the hosts, thanks to a good innings of 74* by Tom's cousin Leland and outstanding pace bowling by David Neill and the quick underarmer, Tom Hanna of the Ulster Club, who did Ireland's first hat trick. Tom regrettably contribute 0 and 1, falling to the lob bowler AW Ridley, in the first innings, and CK Francis, a fast bowler who never fulfilled the expectations his early career arose, in the second.

Much of his military career was spent in India where he developed his skills as a polo player. In 1886, he was a member of the first Irish polo team which crossed the Atlantic and resoundingly defeated the United States.

When he retired, he returned both to Ireland and to cricket, playing again for Na Shuler for whom he had appeared in the 1880s. Subsequently, he returned to India and died in that country following a riding accident.
