Edward Acheson was described as a hard-hitting batsman with a poor defence. He was a brilliant fielder in the deep with a fast and accurate return. He was in the Harrow XI against Eton in 1861, but made only 1, besides taking one wicket for 17. His only first class match was for MCC v Hampshire in 1866. Batting at number 8, he was dismissed without scoring. MCC won by an innings so he had no chance to redeem himself.

His only appearance for Ireland was equally undistinguished, in a match memorable for HH Montgomery, father of the Field Marshal, carrying his bat in the Irish first innings. Acheson was the uncle of GS Foljambe of Nottinghamshire and GAT Foljambe of MCC. He was thus great uncle of EWS Foljambe of Oxford University. None of the three made their mark in the first class game.
