Rebecca Stokell and Sophie MacMahon kept cool heads in Amstelveen yesterday to steer Ireland to a six-wicket victory over the Netherlands and a clean sweep of the three-match T20 international series.

In by far the closest game of the week, the Girls in Green were floundering on 69-4 in the 13th over, chasing the home side’s 116-6 when Stokell was joined by Maguire.

But the fifth-wicket pair worked the ball around so intelligently that they only needed to strike three fours in an unbeaten stand of 50, with the third boundary taking the visitors over the line with five balls to spare.

Stokell finished unbeaten on 33 from 37 balls, while MacMahon made 23 not out from 20 balls. Arlene Kelly was again the most successful of the Ireland bowlers with 2-20 from her four overs, taking her tally to 10 wickets for the series.

Shauna Kavanagh announced her retirement from international cricket before yesterday’s game after a 12-year career that saw the Pembroke stalwart win 110 caps for Ireland - one of only nine players to achieve the feat.

“Playing cricket for Ireland has been a significant part of my life for a very long time but now feels like the right time to end that journey,” the 31-year-old said.
