Ireland men ended their T20 World Cup qualifying campaign in second place after losing by eight runs to Scotland in Edinburgh, despite a barnstorming all-round performance from Mark Adair.

Only bragging rights were at stake at The Grange, as both sides had already secured their places at the 2024 showpiece in the Caribbean and USA, and the home side scorched to 213-6 on the fast scoring ground.

Adair, with 1-19 from four overs, was far and away the most economical of the Ireland bowlers and followed up with a hard-hitting 72 from 36 balls after coming to the wicket with his side struggling on 89-6 in the 10th over.

When the all-rounder, who struck six sixes, became Bradley Currie’s fifth victim - the English-born seamer had also removed the top four - Ireland still had a sniff but 19 runs from the final 10 balls was beyond the last pair and the innings ended on 205-9.
