South Africa Women asserted their authority to complete a 3-0 series whitewash in the last of their ICC World Championship games at Clontarf.

Batting first, the Proteas piled up 278 for five, built around a third-wicket stand of 177, and then a sensational new ball spell by Shabnim Ismail reduced Ireland to eight for four after seven overs, when the World No.2 bowler had figures of four for two. It should have been five for two next over but Sophie McMahon was dropped at second slip.

A sixth-wicket stand of 57 between Mary Waldron and Arlene Kelly, who was also Ireland’s best bowler on the day, gave the scoreboard some respectability but the last four wickets added only 19 runs and when Ismail returned for her last two overs to try and claim her five-for, she needed just five balls to bowl Cara Murray and end the match.

Scores: South Africa Women 278-5 (50 overs, S Luus 93, L Wolvaardt 89; A Kelly 2-40, J Maguire 1-46, R Delaney 1-50) Ireland Women 89 (32.5 overs, M Waldron 32, A Kelly 29; S Ismail 5-8, S Luus 2-27). South Africa won by 189
