St Johnston Cricket Club was founded around the 1890s but it was not until the early 1920s that they came into prominence in North West of Ireland cricket circles when in 1922 they were admitted to the North West Senior League. St Johnston played in the Senior League for two seasons and then moved into the Second Senior Division (Intermediate League) which they won in 1927.

Back in the Senior League again in 1928 the club over the next five to six years had a very good side which narrowly failed on several occasions to win the League title and were beaten finalists in the North West Senior Cricket Cup against City of Derry. Famous names of that period were JL Rankin, Robert McLaughlin and Bobby Taylor. This was for many the Golden Age of North West Cricket when many great players such as Andy McFarlane for Sion Mills and EDR Shearer of City of Derry were dominating the local cricket scene.

St Johnston had leaner times through the 1940s and 1950s in senior cricket but in 1959 a team came together, built around the Reverend McSparran, the Pattersons and the O'Donnells. With the help of ex-Irish international player Vic Craig they had a great cup run ending with a memorable win over favourites Donemana by 38 runs in a very entertaining cup final at Beechgrove, Londonderry.

Unfortunately shortly after this (1964) St Johnston was relegated and not until the introduction of an extended two tier senior league in the early 1970s did St Johnston come back into senior cricket. A very young side featuring the Rankin brothers, the Lapsley brothers, Alan McClure and veteran of the 1959 cup winning team Paddy O'Donnell won the North West Senior Cricket Cup in 1975. Ardmore's Raja Jawad scored 105 not out in the second innings of this final but his team still lost by just 3 runs. That same season St Johnston won the Faughan Valley Cup and in 1976 won it again plus Section 2 of the Senior League to gain promotion back into the top division where they finished second to Donemana at the end of the 1977 season.

Ian RankinDavid Rankin led St Johnston back to the North West Senior Cricket Cup final in 1978 and 1982, winning on both occasions by an innings against Strabane. Bobby Rao was the professional for Strabane in 1982 but the match was dominated by a great 167 not out from St Johnston's Ian Rankin (right).

In 1984 St Johnston, after almost a century of trying, won the North West Senior League. The side was captained by William McKean and featured a fine opening attack of Paul Wallace and lvan Lapsley. The run scorers were David and Ian Rankin, William McKean and Keith Lapsley.

St Johnston have twice been in the semi-final of the Irish Senior Cricket Cup competition, 1983 and 1985, while at the end of the 1987 season they emerged as the first North West winners of the competition when they beat local rivals Brigade at Beechgrove, Londonderry, by 7 wickets.

Following this great win over Brigade St Johnston has had very little further success and at the end of the 1994 season they were relegated to Senior Division 2.
