The team selected for this match included JM Meldon, O Andrews and W Pollock. However, as Ulster played the Philadelphians on the same days as this match, Andrews and Pollock did not play. Also Meldon was injured. In addition Napper and Morrow came in for B Hamilton and H Mansfield of the original selection.

Yorkshire were county champions in 1908, playing 28 matches without defeat so it was no great disgrace to be beaten by them. Only six of their best team played but Rhodes and Newstead proved too much of the Irish batsmen, especially in the first innings. This match was played in the same week as the Philadelphian games.

The first day saw each side complete an innings. Ireland did extremely well to hold the Yorkshiremen to 202, but the Irish batting was melancholy. The wicket looked perfect but it had its peculiarities. The weather was good but the attendance was poor. Yorkshire won the toss and Rhodes and Hardisty opened to the bowling of Ross and Lambert. Harrington was not on the ground so GH McCormick fielded as substitute and promptly dropped Hardisty at mid-on off Ross. Smith missed the same batsman at cover in the same over. These mistakes were not expensive because at 22 Napper caught Hardisty for 10 at square leg off a short pitched ball by Lambert. Two runs later Rhodes was caught at deep square leg by Corley off Ross. With Wilkinson and Grimshaw together a good stand was made. Lambert's bowling figures were 9 overs, 7 maidens for 10 runs. Kelly replaced Ross. When the score reached 80 Wilkinson tried to turn a rising ball from Kelly to leg and skied it to substitute McCormick at third slip. He had made 28 in 50 minutes. Smith then injured his hand in attempting to catch Rothery and Wilkinson of Yorkshire came out to field for him. 100 went up in 95 minutes and soon Smith returned. At 118 two wickets fell to Kelly. Rothery, 11, was out to a good slip catch by Ross and Newstead was caught by Corley at mid-off off his third ball. Grimshaw reached 50 in 90 minutes and the lunch score was 126-5.

Kelly got Sir AW White, captain, lbw for 3 with his second ball after lunch. Bates came in and Lambert hit him a severe blow, knocking him out for a few minutes. At 138 Grimshaw, 61, was run out in attempting a second run, Napper throwing to Browning. His 61 had taken 110 minutes and had steadied the innings. With 150 on the board Ross came on for Lambert who had bowled 26 consecutive overs for 67 runs. Bates and Booth pushed the score steadily upwards until at 190, after adding 52, Ross got Bates taken at mid-wicket by Napper for a pretty 28. Watson joined Booth and 200 went up after three hours. Next ball Kelly caught Booth at mid-off off Ross 30 and in the same over Corley took a great catch after running from mid-on to near the boundary to dismiss Watson. The three bowlers had done a great job to dismiss Yorkshire for 202.

For Ireland GJ Meldon and Bourchier started to Brown and Newstead. From the second ball of Brown's first over Meldon was caught at mid-off for seven. At 12 Bourchier was run out after a misunderstanding with Lambert. The latter and Morrow took the score from 12 to 35, the best stand of the innings. At 35 Rhodes, slow left-arm, came on for Brown and the remaining eight Irish wickets fell for 14 runs. His fourth ball got Morrow for 14, caught at slip, and Browning,0, met a similar fate in his next over. At 38, made in an hour, Smith was caught at slip off Newstead. Ross only made three before returning an easy catch to Rhodes. At 43 the seventh, eighth and ninth wickets fell. Corley was lbw to Rhodes while Lambert, 11 in an hour, was caught at slip off Newstead who also got Kelly caught at the wicket first ball. In Newstead's next over Napper was bowled. Rhodes took 4-11 in six overs and Newstead 4-22 in 12.2 overs. The 49 runs had come in 80 minutes.

The second day's weather was again perfect but the crowd were small. The wicket on the whole gave no great assistance to the bowlers. Ireland followed on and the batting was more satisfactory. The features were free hitting by Meldon, the sterling innings of Morrow and the energetic effort of Kelly who once more proved himself to be a high and mighty hitter. Rhodes this time opened the bowling with Newstead. Bourchier was missed at the wicket off Newstead before scoring. Meldon within 10 minutes had cut Rhodes for four fours. At 29 he was caught in the long field by Bates off Rhodes, having made all the runs. Lambert was LBW to Newstead one run later. Bourchier scored his first run after 25 minutes and then took two nasty knocks from Newstead who was now getting the ball up considerably. 50 came in 45 minutes. Booth came on at 65 and Bourchier, 19, was caught at slip off a rising ball. Browning, 1, was soon caught at mid-off from a faulty stroke at Rhodes. At 81 Ross returned one to Booth. With Smith in Morrow continued to play with confidence and 100 came up in 90 minutes. Newstead bowled Smith, 11, at 107 on a big break-back. Harrington joined Morrow and at lunch the score was 126-6, with Morrow on 48. Just after lunch Booth caught Morrow at slip off Rhodes. 131-7-49. Morrow had played extremely good cricket for 90 minutes. One run later, at 132, 2 more wickets fell to Rhodes, Harrington was caught at slip by Booth and Napper, 0, was caught at point in the same over. Corley, who had been injured, came in to join Kelly and a stand of 36 ensued. Kelly hit all around him and put Rhodes into the trees by the Pavilion. An innings defeat was averted before Newstead bowled Kelly 28. Rhodes, 5-77, and Newstead, 3-59, were again the chief wicket takers. 16 were required to win and Booth and Watson scored 17 in 4.4 overs bowled by Ross and Harrington, the latter bowling from the first time in this match.

This was SC Smith's last game for Ireland. His career had extended over 20 years
