Ireland slumped to another comprehensive defeat in their second game of the Nagico Super50 series, losing by six wickets to Jamaica.

Stuart Thompson was drafted in to replace John Mooney, who flew home last night with a stress-related illness. Paul Stirling was again missing due to injury, so Niall O'Brien opened the innings with skipper William Porterfield, who elected to bat after winning the toss.

The makeshift opening partnership gave their side a steady start, adding 54 in 15 overs, before Porterfield (25) was caught behind. O'Brien top scored with 35 from 54 balls (3 fours) before being unluckily adjudged lbw to the impressive Tamar Lambert (2-27).

Alex Cusack (30) and Gary Wilson (10) looked relatively untroubled as they advanced the total to 100 for 2 in the 30th over, and at that juncture a score in the region of 220 looked like a realistic target.

However Andre Russell (3-19) and Jermaine Taylor (3-33) tore the Irish to shreds as their innings faltered badly, losing the last eight wickets for only 61 to be dismissed for 161 in 46.1 overs.

Tim Murtagh almost gave Ireland the perfect start in the first over of the Jamaican reply, but John Campbell survived a huge lbw shout before he had got off the mark.

Runs for Max Sorensen

Murtagh (1-26) did get an affirmative verdict in his third over, trapping Horace Miller (18) in front, with the score on 20. Jamaica however continued to play positively, scoring at more than five an over throughout.

Nkrumah Bonner struck five boundaries in a quickfire 22 from 15 balls, before edging Max Sorensen behind to give Gary Wilson a routine catch to make it 52 for 2.

Any hopes Ireland had of putting significant pressure on Jamaica were quickly extinguished by a third wicket partnership of 101 in 110 balls between John Campbell (71) and Tamar Lambert (27). Both were given lives by a lacklustre Irish fielding display which was well below their usual high standard.

George Dockrell, playing his 100th game, extracted turn and bounce from a helpful track, while Andrew McBrine also bowled tidily in the face of some attacking strokeplay from Campbell in particular.

Campbell was eventually bowled by Max Sorensen (2-17) for 71 (80 balls, 6 fours, 2 sixes) with just nine needed for victory, while Lambert fell with no addition to the total, giving McBrine his first wicket for Ireland.

Andre Russell finished proceedings with two sixes, one of which was a drop which summed up a forgettable day for Ireland, both on and off the field. Jamaica had passed their modest target with 21 overs to spare, leaving Ireland firmly rooted to the bottom of the table.

Ireland's third game in the competition sees them face the Windward Islands on Friday 7 February.
