On a superb wicket and in delightful weather Ireland batted all day to create a record innings score of 462. It was also a ground record. Lambert's century was the highlight. He had strained his leg in the previous match and had to have a runner. Despite this he was in great form and scored a chanceless 115 with 2 sixes and 13 fours. This was Lambert's fifth innings for Ireland and he was still just 19 years of age. ER Thompson who had batted no. 11 in the previous game opened here with Browning. This move was not successful as Thompson was bowled by Bullen for 1 with the score at 8. Johnson came next and he and Browning had a useful stand until Browning was yorked by HC Laverton for 23.

Meldon joined Johnson and runs came at a great rate although Meldon should have been caught and bowled when he was 30. In the end he made a rather lucky 71 before being caught off Harding. Hynes came next and runs were clocked up merrily. Bullen came back on to bowl and had Johnson caught at the wicket for a faultless 71. Comyn started with 5 fours. Hynes went to his 50 but was then missed at cover. At 270 Comyn was bowled for 26 and Lambert arrived with Kilkelly to run for him. Soon 300 was up and runs came very fast. Lambert twice drove Harding out of the ground. 400 went up and at 433 Hynes was bowled by Newman, a professional, for 97 - his second score of 90 I n the week's cricket. He was missed once and hit nine fours. The 6th wicket had added 163 runs. B Hamilton was caught at slip of Newman for 4. Kilkelly ceased to run for Lambert and took to batting in his own right. At 452 Lambert was bowled by Newman for 115. Kilkelly made 19 and the innings closed at 462. Newman took 4 for 60 in 19 overs and more use could have been made of him.

On the second day, which was also very fine, Mr.Laverton's XI was dismissed for 129 and 234. Five Irish bowlers shared the first innings wickets and six bowlers took wickets in the second innings. FW Stewart (31) and Newman (29) did best with the bat in the first innings of 129 which was over before lunch. 333 runs behind Mr. Laverton's XI followed on and did much better reaching a total of 234. Opening bat H Ross made 58, WL Jefferies 46 and AJG Stancomb 31.

This was CL Johnson's last game for Ireland before going to South Africa, for whom he subsequently played Test Matches. It was A Penny's finale and in 13 matches he had taken 62 wickets at 12.32 runs each.
