For this game CL Johnson was fit enough to play for Ireland and WF Thompson was left out. Philadelphia dropped the wicket keeper Butler and asked HC Thayer to keep. Brewster was also left out and two batsmen W Scott and W Brockie were brought in. The home side played much better on this occasion and despite a great effort by Ireland's later batsmen Philadelphia won by 23 runs. King added 10 more wickets to the 8 he took in the first match. Two of the Irishmen were not really fit to play. Hynes had a fearful black eye and Vint a broken finger.

The first day was very fine and each team completed an innings on a wicket that was fiery and bumpy. Philadelphia lost two wickets for 10 - Patterson playing on to Hamilton at 7 and Scott (who had travelled all night from Pittsburgh) doing the same thing to Johnson at 10. Wood joined Clark, who had opened, and at once gave Penny a chance at point which was dropped. Clark gave Johnson a caught and bowled chance which was also declined and then both batsmen settled down and made the highest partnership of the match - 63. Then at 73 Wood was stumped off Hamilton and Penny bowled Clark with a beauty at 75. Coates and Bohlen hit out very well and it was unfortunate that Bohlen should be run out at 97. One run later Green caught Coates at mid wicket off Hamilton. At 107 Hamilton had Brockie lbw for 0 and another collapse of the tail was feared. In fact the last 3 wickets added 50. Noble (after being twice missed by Gavin in one over) and Thayer added 24 for the 7th wicket. Hamilton had his 5th wicket when Johnson caught Thayer at mid-off. Ring hit one boundary and helped add 13 before Johnson bowled him. The last wicket also added 13 and when Hamilton got Baily Noble was left not out for a most valuable 35. Hamilton had 6 for 64 in 141 balls bowling unchanged.

After lunch Gavin and Vint began for Ireland, who had their usual disastrous start losing four for 23. First Gavin was missed at the wicket by Thayer off King but at 12 Vint was caught by Wood at slip off the same bowler; at 15 ER Thompson snicked Baily to King at point (after being missed by Noble at deep slip); Wood caught Johnson at slip off King at 19 (all this showed how fiery the wicket was); Hamilton cut his first ball for 4 but next ball had his middle stump removed by King. 23-4-4. Meldon came in and as in the first match he made a stand with Gavin. At 35 Clark came on for Baily. At 40 Meldon hoisted one near Bohlen which was misjudged. Baily came back at 54 and at 61 induced Meldon to return one to him. 61-5-18. Very soon Ireland were in terrible trouble being 89 for 9. Hynes was bowled by King's fast one at 70 and Kilkelly was lbw to King at 74. Baily went off for Clark at 80 and Clark's first ball hit Gavin in the stomach and went from there on to the wicket. In since the start his 39 was a splendid innings. Green, after his good batting in the previous match, was elevated to no. 10. He was beaten a few times and Thayer missed him at 88. Wood caught Penny at slip off Clark at 89. Considine was a very good no. 11 and Green began to cut very prettily. 33 were made before Patterson caught a hard drive by Considine at mid-off. Green's 25 not out was the most stylish innings of the visitors. King had 5 for 47 in 160 balls.

The second day, a Saturday, was again delightfully fine and the biggest crowd so far turned out -reckoned at 15,000! Scott took Patterson's place and opened with Clark. Scott defended well, mostly playing forward. Clark scored somewhat the quicker. Hynes and Meldon were tried and although play was slow no wicket fell. Finally resort was made to Green, who seldom bowled. In his second over Clark attempted to pull him on a very short one. He missed and was bowled. 50-1-29. Wood came next and scored at a great pace. He made 28 out of the next 34 before he played on to a breaking ball from Johnson. His 28 included an 8 - all run from 2 overthrows! Patterson was next but he failed again being caught off a bumpy one by Meldon off Hynes. 87-3-0. Bohlen made 5 and was then stumped off Johnson - the ball rebounding off Vint's pads.

Coates and Scott added 24 for the fifth wicket when Coates slashed with a cross bat at Johnson and was bowled. 116-5-12. Lunch was taken at 123 for 5, Noble being in with Scott who was now 35 not out made with the greatest care. Noble afterwards hit four fours in rapid succession but when Penny came on for Hamilton he immediately had Noble nicely taken at mid-on by Hynes. Noble had made 26 out of 37 added. At this stage the situation deteriorated for Philadelphia - after being 153 for 5 they became 159 for 9. Brockie was now in and he watched Scott playing maiden after maiden. Brockie hit a 3 and was then beautifully caught at cover point by Hamilton off Penny. Thayer was bowled by Johnson for 0, the score still being 156. King was next but at 159 he was magnificently caught at square leg by Hynes to give Penny his 5th wicket. Baily and Scott added 22 for the last wicket - just one run less than the margin by which Philadelphia won. Scott hit out and reached his 50. When he reached 53 he skied one from Hynes to Meldon. Scott batted not much less than 3 hours for his patient and steady innings. Penny conceded only 16 runs off 90 balls and Johnson 31 off 130 balls.

At 3.10 Meldon went in with Gavin to face Baily and King. Runs came freely until, at 13, Meldon tipped a very fast one from King and saw Patterson take a very good catch at third man. Green was now put up to no. 3 but alas he failed, being lbw to Baily at 24. With Johnson in Gavin began to hit out. Scott was tried and King changed ends. 20 were added of which Johnson made only 2 before King bowled him at 44. Hamilton and Gavin stayed together until close of play and added 31 more runs. Score was now 75 for 3 (Gavin 35, Hamilton 18) and now 142 were needed to win.

Play began at 11.30 on Monday, King and Baily bowling. Ireland did very well for a while, particularly Hamilton. Clark came on for Baily at 93 and at once had the steadfast Gavin caught at the wicket. 93-4-37. The crowd cheered lustily again when Clark bowled Thompson at 99. Kilkelly joined Hamilton and run getting almost stopped. King sent down 8 successive maidens and had Hamilton caught by Noble at mid-off on the last ball of the 8th of these. 103-6-38. Hynes and Kilkelly added 23 before Kilkelly was lbw to Clark for 15. Vint was next and a long stand was made with Hynes. The bowling was often changed and the home crowd became nervous. At last with 56 still required Hynes put a bumpy one from King to Brockie at mid-on. 161-8-19. Penny came in but at lunch the score was still 161-8. Vint and Penny got set again afterwards and excitement became intense as run after run was hit. In half an hour 20 were added and now only 36 were needed. This was reduced to 26 and King changed ends and Clark came on for Baily. In Clark's first over Vint was brilliantly caught at slip by Patterson - described as a "phenomenal" one. 192-9-33. Considine was last and one run later King bowled him for 0 and the crowd let out a mighty shout. It was Philadelphia's much improved fielding and catching that won this game.
