Bermuda had beaten Denmark in an exciting match by two runs and were expected to be one of the four teams to qualify from this section. Ireland, having lost to USA, had to win this match. They did so in a handsome way, batting and bowling very well and improving their run rate.

It was a good toss to win. The pitch had not dried out entirely due to morning cloud and cold wind but it was hard. So Bermuda were sent in, and were 44 for seven at one point, Mooney, restored to the team in place of Eagleson, pitched the ball up in stark contrast to his form -v- USA and took four for 17 in 10 overs. McCoubrey again did well with three for 28 in his 10 overs. Davy came in for the first time, replacing White, and he, too, justified the decision with a score of 44. Mark Patterson replaced Heasley as the third change.

The pitch, as anticipated, was lively and seven wickets were down by the 20th over.

Steede and Hill opened for Bermuda and the former was out in Mooney's second over caught low down at first slip by Curry. McCoubrey took the second wicket in his second over, Hill being lbw. Mooney's fourth over accounted for the number three, Smith. A wide lifter was nudged to Molins at second slip. In the eighth over McCoubrey got his second lbw decision with Basden being half forward. This was 22 for four in 7.4 overs. Mooney took the fifth and sixth wickets in his fifth and seventh overs. J.Tucker drove to wide mid-off at 25 and the Captain, the left handed Marshall and a good player, drove to extra cover at 34. Mark Patterson replaced McCoubrey (two for 23 in seven overs). In his third over, the 20th, Archer drove to deepish mid-off where Dwyer took a good low catch diving forward.

It can be said that Bermuda made a partial recovery from that point of 44 for seven. The remaining three wickets put on 24, 27 and 20. K Tucker got an inside edge and was caught at the wicket. 68-8-20. Bascombe joined Leverock to add 27 in another eight overs. When McCoubrey was bowled out Patterson replaced him but was very wild bowling four wides in one over and two more two overs later. In that over Bascombe gave Ed Joyce a difficult chance at third man but was caught and bowled when he popped one up two balls later. 95-9-9.

Fox, at number 11, joined Leverock and these two held out for no less than 10 overs adding 20 runs. Curry and McCallan took over the bowling and 100 was up in over 38. Eventually, Leverock, top scorer with 24, drove to Mark Patterson running in at long off. Bermuda could only manage one six and four fours in their 46 overs.

All the Irish bowlers did well with the quicker bowlers taking nine wickets in their 29 overs. Only one difficult chance was missed. A very satisfactory morning's work.

White having been dropped Davy opened for Ireland with Molins and justified his recall to the team. The first over from Fox cost nine runs but the pace slowed and in 10 overs the score was 34. Opening bowler Bascombe changed ends after one over and Molins was dropped at the wicket, a wide chance, when 16 at 29, Bascombe being the unfortunate bowler. Davy opened out and hit two fours. Then, in over 16, Molins was out. He looped a ball to slip off the fourth bowler used, the medium pacer Archer. 50 had come in 14 overs and the wicket fell in the 16th. 59-1-30.

D Joyce came in and saw Davy dropped in the next over bowled by slow left armer Leverock. Davy skied to mid-on running wide and it was a difficult chance. Davy celebrated his let off with a pull for six in the next over. After 20 overs the score was 79, 45 being scored in the second 10 overs. A sixth bowler came on for the 20th over. He was J Tucker, a medium pacer, and he it was who took the second and last Irish wicket to fall. In over 24 he bowled Davy on the forward stroke. Davy's 44 came off 70 balls. 93-2-44.

Ed Joyce joined his brother and the remaining 25 runs came in six overs. At 107 D Joyce (16) gave Leverock a fairly easy caught and bowled chance which was put down. Ed Joyce finished the match with a boundary in the 30th over. This was a good and necessary win which also raised Ireland's net run rate into second place in the table behind Denmark.

In 1994 Ireland played Bermuda in the second round of the I.C.C. Trophy in Nairobi. There was no Irish survivor but three from Bermuda. Smith made 89, Marshall 62 and Steede also played.
