Ireland, after a day's rest, rebounded to beat Denmark following two successive previous defeats against them (European Cup, 1998 and Zimbabwe 2000). The start was poor after winning the first toss of the season and deciding to bat. 42 for three was retrieved by White and Dunlop. Then White, aged just 20, went on to 111 and was not out until the 45th over. Denmark were 66 for six, had a stand of 54, and subsided to 161 all out in 41 overs.

The day again started overcast but improved to sunshine later on. Ireland were playing at a new venue. The pitch was on a plateau and was good if a bit slow. Butler came in for McCoubrey and Haire for D. Joyce. It was PG Gillespie's 50th cap.

McCallan and White faced T. Hansen (left arm) and Khan whose 30 yard run was not justified by his pace. There were no alarms until 25 had been accumulated in the eighth over. Then McCallan played at Khan with bat away from body and was snapped up at slip. 25-1-14. Gillespie was persisted with at number three. He scored four. He, too, was then taken at slip playing across Hansen. 33-2-4. Haire hit Khan straight and low to cover at 42. Dunlop joined White (13) in the 14th over. White suddenly struck out with four fours in two overs bringing 50 in over 15. Dunlop was not in great form but stuck at it and stayed in and gave White as much strike as possible. White went to 51 out of 101 in over 27 with six fours. 13 came off an over from off spinner S. Hansen with a four to Dunlop and two such to White.

Chawla's leg breaks broke the stand in the 33rd over, Chawla's second. The first ball was tamely pushed to mid-on by Dunlop. The stand was 87 runs and Dunlop's share of' 20 (one four) came off 41 balls. White faced 73 balls in this partnership. Chawla soon had another scalp when Khan caught Archer on the mid-wicket boundary at 145. Another medium pacer, Ahmed, got Mooney for one in his third over. He was bowled leg stump.

40 overs had now been bowled. The score was 157 and White was 92. A lot more runs were needed by Ireland. These runs came - 77 of them. In over 43, from Chawla, White reached 102 with a four having faced 150 balls 12 fours. He is a tall man and drives and cuts well. His 102 came out of 178. Two overs later he went down the pitch to a wide ball from Chawla and was stumped for 111 - 157 balls, 174 minutes, 13 fours. Only R. H. Lambert, just 19 in 1893 and T. J. Macdonald, 19½ in 1928, were younger century makers for Ireland. Rutherford had a busy innings. He struck 26 off 21 balls and 200 was up in over 46. He was out at 217 in the 48th over - bowled by opening bowler Khan. Butler hit seven from three balls and was also bowled by Khan in the last over. Cooke was left 17 not out off 19 balls. 234 was an excellent total after 42 for three. Khan took four wickets but went for 49 in 10 overs. Chawla was used too late - three for 35 in eight overs.

Denmark started as badly as Ireland. In the first 10 overs each of Ireland's fast bowlers took a wicket. In the sixth over (Mooney) Lambert (left handed) hit over a drive at 16. Two balls later Singh chased a wide ball from Cooke and Rutherford took a two handed catch diving to his right. At 29, another left hander, S. Hansen, was out in Butler's first over - the tenth. The ball was top edged to Rutherford's left. Ahmed and Siddiq put on 32 for the fourth wicket. Ahmed, in fact, hit six fours in his 30 and made 24 of the 32 run stand. 49 was up in 14 overs and Dwyer bowled the 15th. In his second over at 61, Ahmed was caught by Rutherford on the leg side - his third catch and perhaps the batsman was unlucky.

Kyle McCallan

In McCallan's second over, at 65, Siddiq pushed the ball to Haire at short extra. He ran but failed to beat Haire's direct hit. The next event was Dwyer's 50th wicket in his 38th match. It was his fourth over. Pedersen went down the pitch, missed and was stumped. 66 for six in over 21. Khan and T. Hansen now started a recovery but 169 were needed in 30 overs. The pair had 100 up in over 29 against Dwyer and McCallan. Mooney came back and White began his spell in over 31. The batsmen scored quite quickly and the stand was worth 69 in 15 overs. It was ended by a run out and another direct hit. Khan tried a short off side run and Cooke hit the bowler's wicket. 135-7-34.

The end was not long away. Two wickets fell to White and there was a third run out. At 139 Hedegaard went down the pitch to give Rutherford his fifth victim. At 141 Butler, the bowler, beat the non-striker to the batsman's wicket. The last wicket saw White knock the ball up and catch it one handed diving to his right. T Hansen was left 49 not out off 44 balls with seven fours. The wickets were shared among five bowlers, only McCallan missing out. White was the obvious Man-of-the-Match.
