Ireland had put up a reasonable show in the first match the day before but this display was very disappointing. There were only two performances of note. McCallan, back as an opener, made 65 off 120 balls and Paul Mooney, opening the bowling, took a wicket in four of his first five overs. The pitch played quite well.

Ireland left out Butler and the out of form Davy. Heasley moved up from being 12th man and Doak played for the first time since Malaysia in 1997. A. Flower returned to the Zimbabwe team as Captain and Wishart was dropped - the only change. Campbell kept wicket.

The day was again overcast and chilly when Ireland were sent in when they lost their sixth successive toss. Archer opened with McCallan to the medium pace of Johnson and B. Strang. Archer failed playing over a ball from Johnson in the fifth over. Gillespie started briskly hitting four twos in Johnson's fourth and last over. Pace man Mbangwa replaced Johnson and leg spinner Paul Strang replaced his brother. 37 were added in 12 overs. Then Gillespie was out to a good catch by A. Flower diving to his left low at cover point off Mbangwa. 44-2-14. Waugh came in and scored in ones and twos. His stand of 38 with McCallan was the best of the innings. Streak, Zimbabwe's outstanding bowler, came on for 21st over at 64. He did "the business" in his fourth and fifth overs - in fact the last two he bowled.

At 82 in the 27th over, Waugh pushed out to Streak and was caught by the only slip. In his next and last over, at 86, Dunlop, yet to score, played a similar shot and was caught at the wicket. The Irish numbers five to 11 made six runs between them. All depended on McCallan who was 42 when Dunlop was out.

Doak looked "rusty" and he, too, failed to score. He drove at B Strang and was bowled at 90. Heasley made only three but faced 19 balls and saw 100 up in over 35 and McCallan's 50 in the previous over. Then Heasley was bowled at 113 tamely pushing out at P Strang. McCallan had hit occasional bowler Viljoen, slow left arm, for a six but in over 40 McCallan popped a catch back to Viljoen. His 65 was the centre piece of the innings, the next highest score being Waugh's 17. One after another Cooke at 119, Bushe at 120 and Dwyer at 121 were out so that the last wickets fell for seven runs and six overs were unused. Cooke scooped Viljeon to mid wicket. Bushe was smartly caught and bowled by P Strang while Dwyer mis swept G Flower (slow left arm) who had just come on to short fine leg.

Zimbabwe used seven bowlers and all of them took at least one wicket. P Strang and Viljoen each bowled the full quota of 10 overs for two wickets each. Streak took the important wickets of Waugh and Dunlop for six runs in five overs. Ireland's innings finished early so Zimbabwe faced 11 overs before the lunch break. In those overs Paul Mooney came into his own, bowling fast and straight from the Killester end he took wickets in his first, second, third and fifth overs - only one with a fielder's assistance and three of the four failed to score. Gripper was LBW; A. Flower was out to a good low catch at cover by Gillespie; A Flower's brother Grant was bowled, by a ball which seamed away from him, and P. Strang (who scored seven) was bowled pushing out at the ball. Mooney had bowled 26 balls and taken four for eight. At the other end Cooke went for 13 in three overs and Doak bowled three overs for five. Viljoen had opened and was 17 not out at lunch out of 31. Streak was one.

Mooney continued to bowl but was given only eight overs (four for 17) which seemed strange that he was not bowled out. Doak had a good return after his long absence and bowled six overs for 11. Heasley bowled the 18th over, in which 50 came up, and Dwyer came on for over 19. Heasley gave up 17 in four overs mostly to Viljoen. Dwyer bowled mostly to Streak and kept him quiet - six runs off his five overs. Again there was a strange change with McCallan replacing the inexpensive Dwyer. McCallan gave up nine runs in his first over. His second could justify the change. Viljoen went to his 50 in over 30 but was out in over 31, McCallan's second. He was caught in the gully by Dwyer. 97-5-55. Viljeon hit eight fours and faced 85 balls. B. Strang joined Streak and no more wickets fell. Mooney, Doak and Heasley bowled the last few overs. 100 was up in over 32. Streak began to find the boundary. A four by him in the 36th over ended the match, Streak ending with 37.

Mooney was the star Irish bowler but Doak and Dwyer gave up only 22 runs in the 12 overs they bowled between them.
