In boxing terms this was a mismatch. Kenya chased 226 and won by nine wickets in 37.1 overs. Ireland did well in the latter part of the innings to get to 226. It might have been a little better if Davy had not been run out, if the running between wickets was a bit better, or if Joyce, Heasley and Dunlop had got going. However the way Kenya batted it did look as though 300 would have been successfully chased. For Ireland Cooke was fit enough to play (just). Butler was not. He, Bushe and Archer were left out. Kenya won the toss and fielded on a sunny day.

McCallan partnered Molins to the bowling of M Suji (remembered from Malaysia) and Ochieng. The start was sedate only 26 runs coming in the first 10 overs with no fours. Then at 30, McCallan was lbw to the last ball which M Suji bowled in a six over spell. 30-1-15. Davy joined Molins and despite many bowling changes put on exactly 100 for the second wicket in 26 overs. 50 had come in the 20th over and 100 in the 30th. The outfield was very slow and hits had to be very hard or via the aerial route. In the 19th over, T Suji's fourth, Davy might have been caught at cover when only five at 48 - a difficult diving chance.

In the 20th over Kenya still had seven men in the ring but 50 were added from over 20 to over 30. At 92, Molins (33) gave a straight forward catch to long on which was dropped off Odumbe. Kenya were now using the spinners, Patel, slow left am and the two off spinners, Odumbe and Tikolo. Both Molins (first) and Davy reached exactly 50 in the 37th over. Off its last ball Davy looked for a second run to long on. He was sent back and run out. 130-2-50. The one run which Davy scored in this run out gave him his 50 off 94 balls. With Joyce in Molins hit Tikolo for a four and a six. Without addition he was out to the second ball of Odumbe's next over, chipping to short mid wicket. 156-3-67. He faced 101 balls with three fours and a six. Joyce was next to go. At 168 he was caught high and right handed at deep gully off Tikolo. 168-4-15.

Heasley joined Dunlop and 31 were added in three overs. Dunlop hit Odumbe for sixes off two successive balls in the bowler's last over. M Suji returned for the 47th over in which Heasley was caught at long off. 199-5-11. Dunlop, 27 in 27 balls, fell in the 49th over when he skied a return catch to the bowler, M Suji. 208-6-27. Cooke hit his first ball for six to mid wicket and was 8 at the end with Gillespie 14. Four sixes were hit but only 8 fours on the slow outfield. The Kenya bowling was accurate. M Suji took 3 for 34 in 8 overs and Ochieng only gave up 21 runs in 10.

In five overs from JO Davy and Cooke Otieno and Shah put 41 on the board with 2 sixes and 5 fours. Heasley came on and got Otieno with his first ball. This was a marvellous running catch at deep square leg by Gillespie. Therein lay Ireland's only success. Tikolo joined Shah who was 17 at the time. 50 was up in six overs and 100 in 16. Dwyer, Joyce and McCallan were tried, the latter, surprisingly, as late as the 27th over. It was all to no avail. 150 was up in over 26 and 200 in over 34. The end came when Molins bowled one ball in the 38th over which Shah hit for four. Tikolo went to 100 in the 36th over, reaching the mark with a six off Cooke. He had faced 99 balls. He finished with 110 off 105 balls, with 2 sixes and 9 fours. Shah had 84 off 102 balls with one six and seven fours. No bowler was spared. Best was Dwyer's 33 in eight overs. Tikolo could well be the world's best batsman outside Test cricket. His 110 and the 187 run partnership took only 123 minutes.
