On the day after the three-day match at Rathmines this match began at Castle Avenue but did not get very far due to rain. It was to have been 50 overs per side but started three hours late as a 40 over per side match. Ireland were sent in and after 13 overs there was a further two hour delay due to more rain. At 5.00 p.m. there was another attempt made to resume with the match now at 25 overs per side. Ireland completed their 25 overs but between innings more rain caused the match to be abandoned. This was very disappointing for the match sponsors, Orygen, and their 200 guests. While below expectations the crowd at this match was the biggest that attended any of the six matches played by Australia 'A'.

Australia left out Dale and Campbell. Hussey kept wicket and Symonds and Bichel came in. Ireland replaced Molins (injured) and Olphert with Carson and Gillespie.

McCallan and Carson opened to Gillespie and Bichel. Both proved expensive but both took a wicket in the 10 overs they bowled between than. McCallan was first to go caught at mid-off in the fourth over. 12-1-5. Smyth came in and hit the first five balls of the sixth over (Bichel) for fours. There was a cover drive, a straight drive, an uppish shot to third man and two extra cover drives. In Bichel's next over, his fourth and last, Smyth hit two more fours and brought up 50 after only eight overs.

Carson fell in Gillespie's next over just after hitting a four. 54-2-16. He hung out his bat and was bowled. This brought in Waugh who wasted no time and when the first rain came after 13 overs he was 18, Smyth was 30 and the score 73 for two. When the game resumed Ireland knew they had only 12 overs left to build on the score of 73. Waugh immediately hit Miller into the pavilion. He took 11 off Miller's next over and Young (slow left arm) was greeted with a straight six which brought up 100 in over 17. Smyth gave a stumping chance off Miller when 37 but Hussey did stump him in Young's next over when Smyth missed a leg glance. 113-3-39. Smyth had hit eight fours.

With Dunlop in Waugh reached 51 out of 128 in over 21 having faced only 38 balls. He celebrated in Symond's (off spin) next over by scoring 12 off it including a six over wide long-on. Dunlop joined the fun by hitting a mid wicket six off Young to bring up 150 in the 23rd over. Before it ended Waugh was caught at wide long off at 154. His 67 occupied 47 balls and he batted three minutes short of an hour. There were three sixes and five fours. Symonds picked up two wickets in the penultimate over and three fell in the over. Dunlop (19) mis-hooked to short mid-wicket and Gillespie was caught at the wicket next ball. Cooke pushed his first ball to mid-off, set off but was sent back by Joyce and failed to make his ground. Mooney scored eight in the last over, bowled by Martyn, in which 10 in all were put on. 168 was a reasonable total when one takes into account that the reduction from 40 to 25 overs was not fixed until 13 overs had been bowled. Ireland had scored nearly seven runs per over. Australia used seven bowlers although leading bowler, Julian, only bowled one. Young and Symonds both took two wickets and both conceded seven runs per over.
