Holland were top seeded in this group and duly won this match, on a magnificent sunny day, by 70 runs. Ireland hoped to avenge last August's defeats on the mat in The Hague by, this time, playing Holland on grass. The two Dutch residentially qualified players were the centre piece of the Dutch team in this match. Nolan Clarke from Barbados had scored 64* and 49* in earlier matches in Nairobi. Today he scored 119 out of 206 while at the wicket. For Barbados (1969-'77) he played 26 matches scoring 1,331 runs, average 31.69. He was now 45 years of age. F Aponso from Sri Lanka scored 20 in an opening stand of 45 with Clarke and took 2 for 24 in his 10 overs.

For Ireland Moore came in for P McCrum and justified his selection. Cohen came in for Rea. Jackson was injured so Millar played. Curry's father died during the night. He withdrew and Graham played. Warke and Curry returned home on the day after this match and Doak was given permission to come out.

Holland won the toss and batted. The Irish plan was to keep Clarke away from the strike. It did not really work but the start was quiet. Nelson and Harrison bowled well and when Moore came on he took wickets in his 3rd and 4th overs (52 for 2). Aponso slashed to extra cover and Lubbers was bowled. Then three good and quick partnerships ensued. The 3rd wicket added 66 and 100 was up in 28.3 overs. Then Nelson returned to have de Leede lbw at 118. Clarke was now 59 and he was 99 when Lefebvre was bowled by Moore in the 41st over at 176. C McCrum and Hoey had not been able to stem the scoring. In the 39th over, at 159, Clarke (86) gave Harrison a sharp two handed chance to his right at short square leg off Moore. This chance could have turned the match. Scholte joined Clarke in a stand of 29 which saw 200 up in 44.2 overs. Runs accrued and wickets fell towards the end. In the 46th over C. McCrum had Scholte lbw at 205. Two balls later Clarke was caught at long off for 119 in 197 minutes from 139 balls with 8 fours. He had played very well and placed the ball with ease. He deserved his Man-of-the-Match Award.

In his next over C McCrum bowled Van Oosterom at 214 when he backed away to cut. De Man was run out in over 49. The final over bowled by C McCrum yielded 12 for a final score of 235 for 8, the final 10 overs producing 65. The Irish fielding was very good and Moore's 3 for 39 was the outstanding bowling. There were 14 fours in the innings, 5 each off C McCrum and Hoey.

There was a good brisk Irish start from Benson against Lubbers and Lefebvre who plays for Glamorgan. In the first 6 overs Benson hit a 6 and 3 fours. Then 36 for 0 became 63 for 4 and the game was over. Cohen (5) was caught at the wicket, a nibble, in the 14th over at 36. At 39 C McCrum was bowled by off spinner Aponso. At 42 Lewis slashed at De Leede and was caught at the wicket. 50 came up in 20.5 overs. Benson hit another 6, called for a runner and was bowled by Aponso two balls later. 63-4-39.

With overs running out Harrison and Dunlop took to the aerial route. They added 39. Then Lubbers, returning, had Harrison (28) caught at extra cover at 102 (100 in 32.4 overs). Lubbers had Graham caught at deep square leg in over 40. Dunlop departed at 149 for a good 31. Moore enlivened the end of the innings, scoring 23 off 28 balls. Leemuis took 3 of the last 4 wickets for 34 in 6 overs. The end came in 48 overs. There were 2 sixes and 7 fours in the innings. The Dutch fielding, field placing and bowling were very good.
