Very little detail of this match is still available. Hynes, Hamilton and Nunn were unable to play and were replaced by Shelton (the Phoenix Professional), Hearne (Kent Professional), and RM Marsh (about whom nothing is known). F Hearne was a brother of GG and Alex Hearne, all of Kent. He was born in 1858 and lived to be 90. He was only 5'5" but had a sound defence and good offside shots and was a reasonable bowler. In 1888-89 he toured South Africa and played in two tests. Next year he settled in South Africa and played for them against England in 1891 and 1895. In 1894 he toured Britain with South Africa and played against Ireland. The Aldershot Division were an unknown factor except for SD Maul who had played cricket in Ireland and WG Wyld who had played for Surrey v Ireland in 1879. Major Ravenhill may have been the RH Ravenhill of the 85th Regiment who had played for Ireland v I Zingari in 1866.

There was no play until after lunch on the first day. Then Aldershot Division batted until 6.00 scoring 218. This was chiefly due to a 2nd wicket stand of exactly 100 by WP Ward and J Spens. Ward made 68 with one 5 and two 4's while Spens' 81 included two 5's and one 4. The attack without Hamilton Nunn and Hynes was rather thin and the brunt of it fell on Shelton (6 for 87) and Hearne (2-50). In fact Shelton demolished the tail in spectacular style. Ireland in 40 minutes batting made 61 for 1 in reply. RM Marsh was caught by Ward off Henderson for 24 and AJ Fleming (23) and W Hone Jnr. (4) were not out.

On the second day Ireland batted well into the afternoon and were eventually all out for 308 - a lead of 90. AJ Fleming made 41, JP Maxwell (no 4) 47, Hearne (no 6) 32 and, best of all, L Hone at no. 7 made a vigorous 72, including two 6's, one 5 and four 4's. In all 9 of the 11 got double figures. In the Aldershot Division 2nd innings Ward (22) and Spens (36) again did well for them but when time was up they were only 7 runs ahead with 4 wickets left. Hearne with 3-38 was the most successful bowler.
