This match was scheduled for 60 overs per side. However, water from overnight rain ran under the covers. New Zealand were not keen to bat, or indeed to play. A delayed start was made at noon and the overs reduced to 55. The day was generally fine but it rained for a while causing an early lunch interval. Ireland played unchanged but New Zealand brought in JJ Crowe, AC Parore, MJ Greatbatch and DK Morrison for MD Crowe, SA Thompson, JP Millmow and TJ Franklin.

The Irish performance was better in every way but New Zealand used eight bowlers and the three leading bowlers, Hadlee, Snedden and Morrison, only bowled 19 overs of a possible 30. JJ Crowe and Wright set off to McCrum and Lamba. The ball was keeping low but the pair brought up 50 in the 17th over. Harrison and O'Reilly were tried. At 62 Wright (44) lobbed a catch to Thompson off Harrison. 10 runs later the careful Crowe (19) was brilliantly stumped to give Jackson his 100th victim for Ireland in his 61st match. Only Colhoun, 190 in 87 matches, lies ahead of Jackson.

When rain came after 28 overs the score was 85-2 with Jones and Greatbatch in. These two put on 73 in all in 63 minutes, mostly off O'Reilly and Thompson. Then O'Reilly took two wickets in six deliveries. He bowled Greatbatch for 32 (135-3) and had Rutherford caught (139-4). At 142 Thompson bowled Jones. Neither he nor Greatbatch hit a boundary despite their quick scoring. The last nine overs realised 61 runs - Hadlee, Smith and Priest all striking out against McCrum and Lamba. Harrison's 2-25 in 10 overs was the best but Thomson bowled inexpensively for the second time in two days. Only 10 fours came in the innings, half of them to Wright.

At 4:17 PM Cohen and Lamba opened to Hadlee and Morrison. 25 minutes later these two and Nulty were out for 20. Cohen went without a helmet to face Hadlee. The first ball hit on the head, the fourth ball yorked him. In his third over Hadlee nipped one back to have Nulty LBW - the batsmen "walking" before being given out. Lamba then fell to a brilliant slip catch by Hadlee off Snedden who had replaced Morris. Hadlee went off with figures of 2-13 in six overs and did not bowl again.

Warke hit Priest for 10 in his first over. He and Harrison brought 50 up in the 18th over. Then Priest turned one away from Harrison, Hadlee dived a distance at slip and caught it left-handed. 57-4-17. Lewis and Warke had a stand of 47 in as many minutes. Tea came at 67-4 in 25 overs. Rutherford was bowling with Jones when 100 came up after 34 overs. Then both were out at 104. Lewis was caught for 18 and Warke was run out. Patterson and Jackson both played well but Rutherford took three wickets in all and Ireland finished 40 behind.

Warke's 44 in 106 minutes was well made with five fours. Patterson hit four fours in his 23. Ireland Man-of-the-Match (including Lamba this time!) was GD Harrison for his 2-25 and 17 runs. Hadlee won the New Zealand award. The award was a British Midlands bag with a bottle of Scotch therein. The New Zealand party were very popular and friendly and left a great impression behind them. The gate money of pounds 2300 over two days was above expectation.
