The same team as played on the following day (it was sunny again) on a better than usual Ormeau pitch. Ireland did not bat on winning the toss which seemed a pity as it may be asked to bat at Derby in the Nat West match in late June. The match began at 10:30 AM and was 50 overs per side so that Northants could get home that evening. Ireland did less well in the field but batted more evenly even if the Northants rate could not be reached. The Ormeau ground is bigger and the outfield rougher. Once again Ireland's ability to take singles and twos was shown up. In 276 runs Northants hit 20 boundaries to Ireland's 18 in 171 runs. Again there was a poor crowd but successful efforts had been made to attract schoolchildren.

Felton and Murray again got a good start. McCrum conceded 30 in 5 overs. Nelson gave away 31 in 8. 50 was up in 13 overs and 100 in only 7.4 overs more. McBrine and Semple had come on and at 102 Warke dropped Felton at mid-off so Semple's first wicket was delayed. Not for long. Murray went to 50 in 76 minutes but at 116 Felton sent a skier to Harrison off Semple. 116-1-54. The stand had lasted 80 minutes. Harrison came on with the total at 121 for the 28th over and Thompson was the sixth bowler with the total at 139. 150 was up in 33 overs and lunch was taken at 163-1 after 35 overs had been bowled, Murray 82, Wild 15.

Murray did not add to his previous day's century. He was caught at the wicket off Thompson for 83 with the score on 169. He batted 124 minutes and hit five fours. Stanley joined Wild to put on 37 in 28 minutes. 200 had come up in 43.2 overs. With the score at 206 Nelson caught Stanley brilliantly at deep long-off from the bowling of Harrison. 206-3-17. Harpur faced only 17 balls and failed to score off only two of them. Wild reached 50 in 83 minutes and, when 55, was caught at short mid-wicket off McCrum. 238-4-55. Harpur and Smith raised 32 in only 8 minutes. Harpur hit Thompson for 2 very big sixes and took 19 off his 10th over. McCrum bowled Smith in the last over, leaving Harpur 39 not out in 28 minutes off only 17 deliveries. McCrum took 2 of the 5 wickets for 49 in eight overs. McBrine yielded 38 in 8 and, surprisingly, Nelson only bowled 8 overs out of 10 for 31 runs.

At 2:23 PM Warke and Cohen began to the bowling of Smith and Christie. In the fifth over Cohen was LBW to Smith. 5-1-2. Warke was not in great form but he stayed in while Lewis did his best to get the score moving. Newton and Roberts were tried but the latter did not repeat his Downpatrick success. 50 came up in 20 overs, far from the required rate of 5.5 runs per over. At 66 Lewis, not for the first time, was caught of the sweep shot - against the spin of Roberts. 66-2-37. Tea came after 25 overs with the score at 76-3, Warke mis-timing to short mid-wicket off Newton. Harrison and Garth now added a pleasant 41 in 34 minutes. 100 was up in 32.2 overs but Garth (24) was caught off Cook at 115.

The hero of Downpatrick, McBrine, was bowled for 0 in Cook's next over. No more wickets fell as Harrison and Semple added 52 in the last 11 overs - Stanley bowled five of these for 27 runs. Harrison made 40 of the 52 runs. He reached 50 in 76 minutes and was 60 in 80 minutes off 83 balls. He gave no chance. A better batting display but no attempt to score at the required rate. This was Warkes 50th cap since his first in 1981.
