Ireland International Matches
Ireland lost to Yorkshire by 55 runs
1 Day, Malahide, 2 June 1986
Scorecard

This was a better match for Ireland. It ended in a mild frolic because Ireland could not come to grips with scoring 207 in 60 overs, and settled for respectable batting with six wickets down. For Yorkshire Arnold Sidebottom (one Test In 1985) replaced Jarvis. Ireland replaced Dennison with Lewis and left out Prior (not available due to study for the next three matches) and called upon DA Vincent who had been capped in Zimbabwe. This was a sunny day with another good crowd.

Yorkshire went off to a sedate start. Boycott and Moxon put up 48 in 22 overs. Jones bowled six overs for 14 runs and did not bowl again. Masood was used as first change and bowled six overs for only 14 runs also. Halliday was bowling when the first wicket fell. Moxon hit to McBrine at short mid-wicket and set off. He could not get back when McBrine stopped and threw for an excellent run out. 48-1-22. Blakey came in. McBrine bowled the 25th over and got Boycott out for 39 in the 33rd over. He swept in the air to square leg where Warke caught him. 76-2 with more than half the overs gone. Sharp joined Blakey. 100 came up in the 40th over. The 47th over saw Blakey caught at the wicket off McBrine. 137-3-26. At the end of this over lunch was taken. The score was 137-3, Sharp 43, SN Hartley 0.

13 overs remained from which 70 runs were scored and three more wickets fell. 12 of the overs were bowled by Corlett and Garth. At 153 McBrine caught Sharp for 52 off Garth. At 167 Lewis took a good boundary catch to dismiss Carrick off Corlett and at 181 Garth caught and bowled Love off a leading edge. SN Hartley was 30 not out. The six bowlers had done well with only Garth being expensive. Vincent made two gallant but unavailing efforts at boundary catches.

At 3 PM Masood and Warke began to Dennis and Carrick (a slow bowler). All went well until the seventh over when Dennis bowled Masood. 12-1-12. In the 17th over Dennis had Warke caught at the wicket. 35-2-12. Cohen fell LBW to Dennis in the 21st over. 42-3-10. Love replaced Dennis (12-5-16-3) and he caught and bowled Vincent off a leading edge with his third ball. 44-4-4. The two clubmates, Lewis and Garth now effected a rescue. Sharp came on with leg breaks but, by tea, 38 overs, the score had gone up to 77-4, Lewis 19, Garth 11.

The field placings and standard of fielding were too good to score 131 in 22 overs but the pair played well. 100 came up in 44.2 overs. Lewis looked like scoring his maiden 50 when he drove Sharp and was well taken, one-handed, by the bowler. His 48 came in 81 minutes off 103 deliveries. 120-5-48. The stand of 76 came in 63 minutes. Sharp had Corlett caught on the boundary in his next over. 122-6-1. Eight overs now remained. Sidebottom bowled five overs of his seamers for eight runs. Bairstow bowled two overs and McBrine hit him for one six and seven fours. Boycott bowled the last over in which McBrine was caught off a no-ball (?). At the end, 6:15 PM, Garth was 26, McBrine 24. It was a better effort than the previous day and the sunny weather, the first such of 1986, was a great bonus for a big crowd.

This was E. Jones' last match, having made his debut this season and played all 4 matches.
