Ireland International Matches
MCC drew with Ireland
2 Day, Lord's, 20 May 1867
Scorecard
Derek Scott

This game was washed out after a few overs. It was the third game between the teams, all played at Lords. Four players were making their only appearance for Ireland - Dooley, de Montmorency, Earl of Gosford and Joy. Earl of Gosford was one of the Acheson family and played for Harrow with AJ McNeile and RD Walker (who was playing for MCC). The Earl was the elder brother of Hon. E Acheson who played for Ireland in 1868 at Lords. Pat Dooley was a professional player - the best in Ireland since Doyle. AJ McNeile, playing for the first time, was one of the founders and the present Hon. Sec of Na Shulers, the wandering Irish Club. RA Fitzgerald had become Secretary of MCC in 1863 but had played for Ireland at Lords in 1858 and 1862. This was his final game for Ireland. Perhaps he was qualified to play by his name and his many trips to Ireland with I Zingari. Another debutant HH Montgomery was to become Bishop of Tasmania. Some members of each team played once or more for I Zingari against Ireland. They were Cole, McNeile, Joy, Fitzgerald and Gosford of the Irish team and Round, Kingscote, Hutchinson and Buller of MCC.

This was a strong MCC XI with a number of notable personalities. There were four University Blues. RD Walker, one of the Walker's of Southgate played for Harrow and then for Oxford in 1861-65. He did nothing exceptional with bat or ball but was in RAH Mitchell's three winning teams in 1863-64-65. He was the last man to play in five Varsity Matches - it became impossible by a decree in 1865. By wearing a Harlequin shirt in the match Walker caused a rule to be made insisting on white henceforth. The Walkers helped to found Middlesex CCC in 1864 and until RD's death in 1822 a Walker was always either Captain or President. E Willis was a fast bowler for Oxford in 1852-53-54, being captain in both 1853 and 1854. All three games were won by Oxford. RD Balfour kept wicket for Cambridge in four Varsity matches, 1863-66 and all four were lost. RA Bayford played for Cambridge in 1857-59, being captain in 1859. BB Cooper was a well-known player for Kent and Middlesex and then he went to Australia and played for Victoria and for Australia v England in the first ever Test Match in Melbourne in 1877. Kingscote was a splendid amateur wicket keeper and Buller was to be a great thorn in the side of the Irish Bowlers in the I Zingari matches of 1867 and 1868.

Montgomery had scored 5 and Cole 2 with 3 extras when rain forced the match to be abandoned. The 11th player on the Irish side, if there was one, is unknown.
