This game closely followed the pattern of the Dublin match but rain intervened to save Ireland from another innings defeat. Rain on both days made conditions unpleasant and the attendance was poor. Between the showers the Indians batted for 248 minutes and made 289-8 declared. Mantri and Roy put on 102 in 105 minutes for the first wicket. Roy was then caught and bowled by Huey for a painstaking 24. DK Gaekwad was caught in the gully in the same over for one. Boucher had not been bowling well but he produced a real beauty to beat Mantri at 136. Mantri was at the wicket 136 minutes for his well played 78. Phadkar and Gopinath were now together and in 53 minutes 85 were added by attractive if sometimes reckless hitting. Gopinath was caught at slip off Bowden for 33 then Adhikari and Phadkar added 46 of which the former made nine before being caught by Martin at deep mid-off off Bowden. One run later Phadkar threw his wicket away attempting a crazy shot off Huey. He had scored 103 runs in 118 minutes and every aspect of his innings was superb. He hit only seven fours and scored off nearly every ball. With a high backlift the drive - straight and to the off - were his favourite shots but his repertoire included every shot, both orthodox and unorthodox. The innings was closed at 5:15 pm.
Ireland got away to a bad start losing Jacobson, McCloy and Pollock for 25. Wilson came in to join Bergin and both remained to the close. At the end of day one Ireland's score was 60-3 with Bergin 16 not out scored in 90 minutes and Wilson 19 not out, scored in 30 minutes. Next morning Wilson was taken at short leg off Phadkar for 24. Martin was beaten by Chowdhury at 76. Armstrong came in and again, as in Dublin, used strong-arm tactics. He hit 29 out of 46 in 40 minutes and was then bowled by the left-handed H Gaekwad. Two runs later Bergin lifted his foot for an instant while facing Shinde and was stumped. He had made 36 out of 124 in just over three hours. His defence was perfect and he batted with the disadvantage of two injured hands. Boucher made a pretty 14 and the innings closed at 150. Shinde was again the chief menace and took 5-35.
In the follow-on Bergin was caught by Mantri nibbling at Phadkar - an Indian wicket-keeper had dismissed him for the fourth time in four attempts and for the fourth time the Irish opening pair had failed to put 10 on the board before being parted. McCloy batted for half-an-hour and, as always, looked good without getting anywhere. He made eight and was caught and bowled by Chowdhury. The next three batsmen all failed to score. Pollock was bowled fourth ball by Chowdhury, playing a poor stroke. He had thus "bagged a pair" for the first time in an international game. At 35 Jacobson hit a no-ball back to Shinde who caught it and ran out Wilson who had backed up too far. As 44 Martin was caught behind the wicket off Gaekwad, also for a "duck". 17 were added for the sixth wicket before Armstrong was lbw to Phadkar for four. Boucher came in but at 68-6 heavy rain stopped play. More rain half an hour later caused the game to be abandoned at 4:15 pm. Jacobson had 41 to his credit out of the 68. He had batted for 105 minutes and looked more like the confident Jacobson of some years ago.
