Ireland International Matches
Ireland drew with MCC
2 Day, Ormeau, 9 August 1926
Scorecard
Derek Scott

There were two separate teams selected to play MCC, one in Belfast and the other in Dublin. Of the original team selected to play in Belfast, seven cried off and those who came on in their place were Allen, Fleming, Harris, Irwin, Moore, Pigot, and Raynor.

A moderate attendance saw a slow start to this match. In 45 minutes the score was 25-2, Hampton having bowled both Swalwell and Grose. Nash, the Irish wicket-keeper, was struck on the head and retired for a while. Kirke and De Burgh (who had previously played for Ireland against Oxford University) added 63 for the third wicket before Lambert caught and bowled Kirke. De Burgh completed a fine 50 but was bowled by Hampton at 101. Robert and Foster added 65 for the fifth wicket but runs were still coming very slowly. Moore caught Roberts brilliantly with his left hand and the innings was quickly finished off. Eddis was absent owing to missing a train connection.

Ireland began at 4:15 p.m. and at tea were 43 for no wicket. After tea Irwin hit out and was bowled after making 37. 100-4 was the close of play score, Moore having compiled a very useful 25. On the second morning, in dull weather, Colthurst and Nash took the score to 141 before the fifth wicket fell. Colthurst was out for 35 and at 153 Nash left after a faultless 26. Lambert steadied the end of the innings and his 34 included some of the best strokes of the match. He was out at 204 and then Fleming and Hampton carried it over to 219 at which score the innings ended.

Grose and Hancock got 80 in an hour for the MCC first wicket. Allen's first ball then had Grose caught at the wicket for 35. Fleming then caused a collapse by taking the next four wickets for 23 runs and the score was now 102-5. McIver left at 113, Foster at 138 and at 153 Fleming bowled Kirke with a beautiful ball. The declaration came at 168-8. Fleming had enjoyed great success getting 6-53. Ireland had to score 138 in 80 minutes to win, but in the dull conditions it was hardly possible. A shower 10 minutes before time ended the game. Pigot batted very brightly for his 36 not out, the only double-figure score of the innings.
