For the second successive year Lawrence took his United All Ireland XI to Scotland. The tour began in Belfast against XVI of NICC which ended in a draw. The XVI made 90 (Samuels taking 10 wickets) and 69 for 10 and Ireland scored 138 (W Hone Snr 42.). Only 7 of the Dublin contingent crossed to Scotland to play XIV of the Caledonian C.C. The team was filled up by J Davidson of NICC and by J Sands of Drumpellier, and D Duff and W Swann, both of Clydesdale. The United XI won by 5 wickets, two minutes from time. Sands and Lawrence shared the wickets and Ross, Sands and Hone all exceeded 20.

The third match was the one in question - against Col. Buchanan's team. This year the Irish side only opposed XIV and not XVI as in 1860. Due to rain the match was left drawn in a very interesting position - Ireland set to make 53 to win were 25 for 5. Rain in fact ruined all three matches of the tour and the whole summer of 1861 was a very bad one. Ireland again called on Swann of Clydesdale and also on Daniel Duff and John McNeil, two famous West of Scotland CC players. Obviously these three were playing their only match for Ireland. McNeil became joint President of the Scottish Cricket Union with Col Buchanan when that body was first started in 1879. McNeil was a fine batsman and Duff was a good left arm bowler who took 11 wickets in the match.

Unfortunately no detail of the match is preserved. Buchanan's team made 75 in each innings, only Keep reaching 20 in either innings. Ireland got a first innings lead of 23 due to a splendid innings by the 19 year old W Hone Snr. He made 36 and was supported by CH Kinahan's 16. Only 53 were required by the Irish team in the second innings but good bowling by Capt. Jessop and a run out saw 5 wickets down very quickly but some of the best players had not batted in the second innings so the draw was probably an even one. For Ireland Duff took 11 wickets, Lawrence 10 and there were no less than 5 run outs.
