If the tie and Super Over defeat against the Netherlands had the West Indies on the ropes, Scotland landed the knockout blow today in Harare as they secure a seven wicket win to eliminate the men from the Caribbean from contention for World Cup qualification.

Put into bat, the West Indies collapsed to 81-6, with Brandon McMullen taking the first three wickets to fall. A 77 run partnership for the seventh wicket between Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd was able to give a bit more respectability to the West Indian innings before both fell in quick sucession.

The final total for the West Indies was 181. In addition to the three wickets picked up by McMullen, Chris Sole, Mark Watt and Chris Greaves all took two each.

Scotland lost Christopher McBride from the first ball of their run chase before a 125 run partnership between Matthew Cross and Brandon McMullen provided the backbone to the Scotland innings. McMullen fell in the 30th over for 69, whilst Cross remained unbeaten on 74 as Scotland completed a seven wicket win.

The win meant that for the first time in men's World Cup history, the West Indies will not be participating in India later this year. Whilst much will no doubt be written about the decline of West Indian cricket in the coming days and weeks, credit must go to Scotland who were quite simply the better team in all aspects today.

Scotland will no doubt be happy to have secured a modicum of revenge by eliminating the team that knocked them out in the 2018 qualifier. Their attention will now turn to Zimbabwe, their next opponents on Tuesday. West Indies have a chance for some consolation points when they take on Oman on Wednesday.
