The Netherlands have lost their opening Super 12 match at the T20 World Cup after their batting largely failed against Bangladesh today in Hobart.

Bangladesh started with a 43 run opening partnership between Najmul Hossain Shanto and Soumya Sarkar, but the Dutch bowlers - breifly interupted by rain - got back into the game and had the Bangladeshis on 76-5 after the 11th over.

A partnership of 44 between Atif Hossain and Nurul Hasan swung the game back to Bangladesh, and when Hossain was the seventh wicket to fall - having scored 38 from 27 balls - at the end of the 18th over, Bangladesh were 129-7. The last two overs brought 15 runs and they had scored 144-8. Paul van Meekeren and Bas de Leede both picked up two wickets for the Dutch.

Any hopes the Dutch had of chasing their target quickly evaporated when Vikramjit Singh and Bas de Leede were removed from the first two balls of their reply. Max O'Dowd and Tom Cooper were run out trying to get runs that were never there and the Dutch were 15-4. Colin Ackermann - who survived the hat-trick ball at the start of the innings - held firm with Scott Edwards for a while, putting on 44 before Edwards fell for 16 in the 12th over. Ackermann held up an end and scored 62 from 48 balls before he was ninth out in the 17th over with the score on 101.

A late innings cameo from Paul van Meekeren (24 from 14 balls) got the Dutch closer than they probably deserved as he fell from the last ball with the score on 135. The nine run margin may come back to haunt Bangladesh, for whom this was their first win at this stage of the T20 World Cup.

The Netherlands will next be in action on Thursday when they take on India.
