The Scottish leg of New Zealand’s European tour has come to an end with victory in a one-off ODI at the Grange.

Batting first after they won the toss, Scotland started with openers Kyle Coetzer and Michael Jones putting on 46. A flurry of wickets though left Scotland well on the back foot at 107-5 in the 25th over.

They recovered though thanks to a 92 run partnership between Matthew Cross and Michael Leask, the partnership ending when Daryl Mitchell has Cross caught behind for 53. Leask was the next man out but not before he’d reached 85 from 55 balls.

Some late order hitting from Mark Watt (31 from 25 balls) and Safyaan Sharif (28 from 29) helped Scotland post 306 before their last wicket fell two balls from the end of their innings.

In New Zealand’s reply Finn Allen raced to 50 from 48 balls as part of an opening partnership of 78 with Martin Guptill. Guptill was eventually out for 47.

It was the fourth wicket pairing of Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell that secured the seven wicket win for the tourists as they put on an unbroken 175. Mitchell scored 74 from 62 balls but Chapman was the star, scoring 101 from 75 and becoming the first player to score ODI centuries for two different countries who didn’t do so for England and Ireland.

New Zealand’s European tour will conclude with two T20Is at Voorburg in the Netherlands on Thursday and Friday. Scotland’s next international action will be a CWC League 2 ODI tri-series against the UAE and USA in Aberdeen that starts on 10th August.
