KEVIN O’BRIEN will line up alongside Kevin Petersen, Jonty Rhodes and Brett Lee for the World Giants next week after signing to play four T20 matches in the new Legends League Cricket tournament in Oman.

The most capped player in any Irish sport had his future thrown into doubt before Christmas when he was left out of the squad picked to tour the USA and West Indies.

While O’Brien has retired from one-day internationals, and would not have been involved in the World Cup Super League series being played in Jamaica, he believes he can still contribute in the shorter form with only Paul Stirling averaging more last year.

Next month’s T20 World Cup qualifiers will also be played in Oman, starting on February 11, and if the 37-year-old can show he still has the appetite and eye to score quickly at the top of the Giants order it’s inconceivable he won’t be recalled by Ireland.

“It’s an exciting new tournament and a great chance to learn from some of the biggest names to play T20 cricket,” O’Brien said.

“I’ve only retired from ODIs and feel I still have a lot to give Ireland in both T20s and Test matches.”

The Legends League starts on January 20 with O’Brien’s Giants competing with the India Maharajahs and Asia Lions for a place in the final nine days later.
